U.S. medical researchers have identified the cholera strain responsible for the outbreak in Haiti, but they say it might be impossible to determine how the illness was introduced.

Haiti cholera outbreak

Since a massive earthquake hit Haiti in January, health experts have been on alert for the outbreak of serious illnesses in the Caribbean nation.  The quake forced tens of thousands of people to flee damaged homes and live in tents, with little access to clean water and proper sanitation.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, deployed 250 health experts to Haiti earlier this year to help rebuild the government's public health services and watch for potential outbreaks of disease.

Hurricane Domas has been downgraded to a tropical storm and is expected to touch down on the Bahamas by night fall. In the mean time the residents of Haiti are recovering from the heavy rains that hurricane Domas dumped on the island.

The Carma Foundation's heart goes out to the Haitian community affected by the hurricane.

Carma Foundation Melky Jean with Leslie, Bernadine, Lucine and baby Stanley

Anyone who knows Melky knows that she is not an early riser, but when it comes to helping people and spreading good karma her body seems to naturally wake up in the wee hours of the morning. In anticipation of seeing little Bernadine it would be  no different.

"I awoke at 4:30 am to catch my flight to Atlanta, no alarm clock needed." exclaimed Melky as she happily recollects the morning that she had scheduled to visit Bernadine in Atlanta.

Bernadine is a sixteen year old girl that had to be medevac to the United States after the January 12th earthquake in Haiti. Pregnant and near death, Bernadine spent several days in a coma. During her journey she met Carma Foundation's very own Leslie Sosnowski who was a volunteer at the Medashare tent.

Melky Jean Get's Inspired

"I sat in my bed at my new apartment in Miami, and watched a boat load of Haitian refugees attempt to come into the country. I watched as people jumped in the water and tried to make it to shore. How the boat even made it was a miracle to me. I started to think about all the people who didn’t survive, and this Haitian American girl became emotional. I picked up the phone and called my brother. I don’t even know if he remembers what he told me. But in true big brother fashion, he told me to Do Something." - Melky Jean

"I believe in the “Butterfly Effect” I have seen for myself the impact that one dedicated person can have. I have seen inspirational joy, pride and resilience in the eyes of children living in most peoples definition of hell. I have seen a nation that is fighting insurmountable obstacles to rebuild itself and sings with celebration as they do it. I am dedicated for life to the Children of Haiti and the Carma Foundation and I am blessed, humble and honored to be doing so.”
