In her words:

When the first opportunity was presented to me to fly into Haiti after the earthquake, I succumbed to fear and self-doubt.  After all, I wasn't a doctor, nurse, paramedic, or even clergy, simply a wife and mother and humanitarian who had been to Haiti 7 times in the past 3 years.   Other than a strong working knowledge of the French language, and a degree of comfort in and around Haiti, I didn't think I had much to offer as a first responder.  I was glued to the TV in Paris,  where oddly enough I had arrived 2 days prior to the quake.

When a series of powerful earthquakes devastated the Haitian capital of Port Au Prince on January 12, 2010, the whole world responded with financial and humanitarian support. But now that the dust has settled and the initial shock has worn off, the painful truth is that Haiti’s problems are greater than ever. To rebuild a city that lies in ruins will require a serious commitment that lasts long after the news cameras pack up and go home. Rebuilding will require both inspiration and dedication. That’s what the song “Count On Me” is all about.

Melky Jean Get's Inspired

"I sat in my bed at my new apartment in Miami, and watched a boat load of Haitian refugees attempt to come into the country. I watched as people jumped in the water and tried to make it to shore. How the boat even made it was a miracle to me. I started to think about all the people who didn’t survive, and this Haitian American girl became emotional. I picked up the phone and called my brother. I don’t even know if he remembers what he told me. But in true big brother fashion, he told me to Do Something." - Melky Jean

"I believe in the “Butterfly Effect” I have seen for myself the impact that one dedicated person can have. I have seen inspirational joy, pride and resilience in the eyes of children living in most peoples definition of hell. I have seen a nation that is fighting insurmountable obstacles to rebuild itself and sings with celebration as they do it. I am dedicated for life to the Children of Haiti and the Carma Foundation and I am blessed, humble and honored to be doing so.”
