Lending visibility and her voice to the protest is Carma's own Melky Jean

by Francesca Guerrier, Haiti Liberte

Haitians rally in Pompano Beach for TPS (Temporary Protected Status) instead of deportation for 30,000 of their countrymen. The remittances sent home to Haiti from the U.S. comprise nearly 30 percent of Haiti’s economy. The NAACP is pressing President Obama to grant TPS.

Pompano Beach, Fla. – Over 500 demonstrators gathered in front of the remote immigrant detention jail known as the Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach, Florida, last month to demand that the Obama administration stop the threatened deportation of some 30,000 Haitians back to their strife and storm battered country.

Melky Jean Get's Inspired

"I sat in my bed at my new apartment in Miami, and watched a boat load of Haitian refugees attempt to come into the country. I watched as people jumped in the water and tried to make it to shore. How the boat even made it was a miracle to me. I started to think about all the people who didn’t survive, and this Haitian American girl became emotional. I picked up the phone and called my brother. I don’t even know if he remembers what he told me. But in true big brother fashion, he told me to Do Something." - Melky Jean

"I believe in the “Butterfly Effect” I have seen for myself the impact that one dedicated person can have. I have seen inspirational joy, pride and resilience in the eyes of children living in most peoples definition of hell. I have seen a nation that is fighting insurmountable obstacles to rebuild itself and sings with celebration as they do it. I am dedicated for life to the Children of Haiti and the Carma Foundation and I am blessed, humble and honored to be doing so.”
